About the Temple

Abirami Samedha Amirthakadeshwarar Temple, Thirukadaiyur

This temple is one of the Eight Virataanams (Avadharams) of Lord Shiva and belongs to Dharmapura Aadinam (Mutt). Lord Shiva is called Kalasamhaara Murthy, since he hit Yama. Thirukadavoor (Thirukadaiyur) – What is the meaning of Thirukadavoor (Thiru + Kadam + Oor) – “Thiru” means Thirupaarkadal. Mahalakshmi came from Thirupaarkadal and is known as Thirumagal. Amirtham also originated from Thirupaarkadal. Hence, it is know as Thiru Kadam. So, this Thiru kadam i.e, Amirtha kadam is brought to Thirukadaiyur by Maha Vishnu for giving it to Devas. The name of the pond where Maha vishnu was planning to share the Amirtham behind the Thirukadaiyur temple is called Amirtha Pushkarani. This avatharam name for Lord Vishu is called Amitha Narayana Perumal. Lordess Abirami is believed to come from the ornaments of Lord vishnu. The place where Annai Abirami exists is called Kaala Peedam. This is one among the 51 Sakthi peedams. Kaala Peedam means the place where fear from Yama is relieved
